Berry Powder Selection Guide

Choose the fruit powder format around the result you need: carrier-free composition, a water-soluble application, powder handling, cost and supply planning.

A Quick Starting Point

  • Need a water-soluble application or a lower-cost format? Start by evaluating a spray-dried juice grade.
  • Need no added carrier and a premium fruit ingredient? Start with a freeze-dried grade, allowing for fruit solids and moisture-sensitive handling.
  • Need a different organic carrier? Ask about a custom project rather than assuming the standard stocked grade has a different composition.

Freeze-Dried vs. Spray-Dried: Strawberry & Raspberry

The same selection questions are useful for blueberry and other fruit grades. This table describes PSI’s listed and custom supply options; it does not claim that every manufacturer’s freeze-dried or spray-dried powder has the same composition.

Compare the format before selecting the grade

Carrier & composition Standard organic spray-dried grades use organic corn-derived maltodextrin. The listed strawberry grade is 90% organic strawberry juice powder + 10% organic maltodextrin. Other fruit grades have their own confirmed proportions. Our listed organic freeze-dried fruit grades contain no added carrier. Select this format when a fruit-only ingredient is a priority.
Water-soluble applications The starting point when you need a water-soluble ingredient, particularly for drinks and reconstituted blends. Confirm the grade and test clarity, dispersion and any sediment in the final formula. Contains fruit solids and fiber; not specified as fully water-soluble. Evaluate dispersed particles, texture and sediment rather than expecting a clear solution.
Caking & handling A carrier can improve handling, but fruit juice powders still need protection from moisture. Keep sealed and follow the grade storage instructions. More sensitive to moisture pickup and caking, particularly strawberry powder. Limit open exposure and reseal promptly; include handling and storage in sample evaluation.
Cost & positioning Generally the more cost-effective format for the same fruit and a practical starting point for commercial formulation. Compare cost at the intended use level. Generally higher cost and positioned as a premium carrier-free fruit ingredient. Compare the finished-product value and cost per serving.
Custom carrier options Organic fiber or organic tapioca-derived dextrin can be reviewed as custom options. Confirm the exact carrier, composition, specifications, development feasibility, minimums and schedule. These are not automatic substitutions in standard stocked grades. No added carrier in the listed grades. Review any request for a modified formulation as a separate project.
Stocking approach Selected standard spray-dried ingredients are stocked in California. Confirmed in-stock orders dispatch within 48 hours; stock levels reflect established customer demand. Most freeze-dried supply is arranged against project orders because of handling and storage considerations. First non-stock orders may take about 8 weeks; ongoing stocking can be planned against stable usage.
Repeat-order planning For established programs, discuss agreed safety stock and replenishment based on forecast consumption and release cycles. The same safety-stock planning is available for established programs. A repeat order does not automatically restart the full first-order production lead time.
Documents & trial Review the grade specification, full composition, carrier source and certification scope. Test in the actual application. Review specification, nutrition reference sheet, general flow chart and lot-specific COA. Test mixing, texture, moisture handling and the final application.

On phones, swipe the table horizontally. Reconstitution depends on the grade, formulation and mixing conditions; neither the process name nor a carrier choice guarantees finished-product performance.
